The Story of Chalk & Stone
A winery named for the geology beneath our feet and the character it brings to every bottle.
Chalk and stone are not poetic devices. They are the literal foundation of our vineyards—the mineral-rich soils that define the terroir of upper Sonoma County and shape the wines we make.
Chalk brings brightness, lift, and a fine tension that carries through the finish. It is the source of acidity, precision, and the kind of mineral clarity that makes a wine feel alive.
Stone provides structure, depth, and the age-worthiness that separates serious wine from simple pleasure. It is the backbone, the form, the quiet power that holds everything together.
Why Sonoma
We chose upper Sonoma County for its unique geology—a convergence of ancient marine deposits, volcanic soils, and elevated terrain that creates ideal conditions for growing wines of complexity and restraint.
The region's cool climate, influenced by coastal fog and elevation, allows for extended hang time and the development of natural acidity. The result is wines that balance ripeness with freshness, power with finesse.
What the Name Means
Our name is a direct reference to the two dominant soil types in our vineyards. Chalk—technically limestone-derived soils—imparts mineral tension and brightness. Stone—fractured volcanic rock and ancient sediment—provides structure and depth.
Together, they form the duality that defines our wines: lifted yet grounded, precise yet textured, elegant yet built to age.
Winemaking Ethos
We practice restraint. Our role is not to impose style but to reveal what the vineyard offers. We use minimal intervention, native fermentation when possible, and aging regimens designed to integrate rather than dominate.
The goal is clarity—wines that express their origin with precision and honesty. No heavy extraction, no excessive oak, no manipulation for the sake of market trends. Just the vineyard, the vintage, and the geology beneath.
Great wine is not made in the cellar. It is grown in the vineyard and shaped by the ground. Our job is simply to honor that truth.
